Makam-ı Şerif Mosque and The Tomb of Prophet Daniel

The mosque was constructed in 1857. Its main area has rectangular plan, vaulted and arched. Mihrab is plain and smooth. Grave of Prophet Daniel is located at east. Importance of the mosque is due to availability of the grave of Prophet Daniel. According to the rumour, Prophet Daniel was invited to Tarsus due to a famine year and then an affluent period experienced, therefore he was not sent back to Babylon, and buried at the current Makam Mosque after his death. When Tarsus was conquered during the Caliph Ömer period (637), grave of Prophet Daniel was opened, and a corpse was found wrapped with a fabric weaved of golden yarns inside a large sarcophagus. Upon examining the ring on his finger, a depiction of a young kid between two female and male lions found on the gem of the ring. In order to prevent stealing of the corpse, it was buried to a deeper level than the previous level upon order of Caliph Ömer and a small creek coming from the Berdan River diverted over the grave. Thus, the tomb was physically hidden and secured.
