St. Paul’s Well

Saint Paul, who contributed greatly to the spread of Christianity and was the first theorist of Christianity, was born in Tarsus. The historical building, defined as the 'Saint Paul's Well', is located in a courtyard that is considered to be the house where Saint Paul lived. It is known that the well, located about 200 meters northeast of the Ancient Street, was built in the name of St. Paul and the remains of an old place here were used as a visit for many years. It was believed that well water was sacred and healed drinkers during the period when the Christians lived intensely in Tarsus. Archeological researches carried out in the 30-meter-deep well and its immediate surroundings, which have a rich history in terms of history, have shown the existence of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman cultural layers. The historical place, which has been taken under protection after restoration works, is still attracted by the attention of visitors and is visited by the believers for pilgrimage. Saint Paul's Well and its surroundings are on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
