Kırkkaşık Historical Bazaar

There were plenty of taverns and covered bazaars for accommodating and performing commercial activities in Tarsus, that is located at the intersection point of east, west, north and south routes and having an active trade in all ages. The covered bazaar, that was constructed by Ramadanid Ibrahim Bey in 1579, is called as Kırkkaşık Bazaar due to spoon decorations on the facade. The historical structure was initially used as “hospice and madrasa”, but it was functioned as “covered bazaar” after the Republic. The structure, having a rectangular plan, is made of cut stone. The structure has 25 rooms and 7 domes which is accessed through 2 gates located at east and west directions. Kırkkaşık Bedesten has received the “Project Contest Prize” of Historical Cities Union and started to serve its visitors after arrangement of shops and offices located in it. Sales shops selling souvenirs such as ceramics, woods, copper, silver, leather, weavings among local handicrafts, and restaurants serving local Tarsus meals, cafes serving the unique “Kaynar” drink are places which are generally preferred by tourists. .
