Old Tarsus Houses

Old Tarsus Houses

It is possible to talk about the existence of a unique civil architecture shaped by the multiculturalism of the last century in Tarsus. Tarsus Houses are one of the rare places where traditional housing diversity can be preserved significantly in Çukurova. Almost all Tarsus houses are concentrated in the neighborhoods within the old city walls. Those that reached today have undergone changes according to needs in recent years, and additions such as kitchens, toilets and bathrooms have been made in their interiors. While their external appearance is largely preserved as they are stone, the earth-covered roofs are covered with tile or zinc. It is seen that stone, mudbrick and wood were used in harmony in the formation of the architecture of the houses lined up on both sides of the narrow streets. In Tarsus houses, which have two plan types placed perpendicular or parallel to the street, the ground floors are generally considered as "workshops". There was a small or a large courtyard in every house. Although these spaces, where most of the life passes, are behind high walls, they are spacious and generally look like a small garden. The most impressive aspect of Tarsus house tradition are its doors. Despite the simplicity of the interior parts, the dense ornamentation at the entrances is enriched with geometric and floral patterns as in the whole east.
