The Ancient Street, which was unearthed in 1993 with a foundation excavation, reveals a large and solid section from the magnificence of Tarsus about two thousand years ago. It is interesting that many famous names of the period used this road, which was understood to have served for a long time in antiquity. These include "Saint Paul, Cicero, Julius Casear, Athenedoros, Nestor, Cleopatra, Markus Antonius, Octavian (Augustus) and Hadrian". The ancient street, estimated to have been built in the 1st century BC, is located in the very center of modern Tarsus today. It is 6.5 meters wide with basalt stones placed in polygonal technique and 60 meters of it have been unearthed today. At first glance, the herringbone form and the sewer system just below it show that it is architecturally different from other roads in Anatolia. There is also a colonnaded platform just east of the street, and a Roman house belonging to a period after the street on the west side. While this house with a mosaic courtyard probably points to the 4th or 5th century AD, it also documents that the street has been used for a long time.
